Gomez-Pena: A border shaman

Guillermo Gomez-Pena is convinced that he lives in a border culture and that this culture is misinterpreted. He emphasizes that people do not understand each other's culture. According to his book Exercises for Rebel Artists: Radical Performance Pedagogy border artists play a major role in exploring and explaining the limits of these cultural boundaries. They learn Mexicans for instance how to understand American culture and vice versa.

Guillermo Gomez-Pena claims to be such a border artist. He calls himself a border shaman and a borderologist, an expert in border culture. Gomez-Pena describes a border shaman as a performance artist who uses monologues, street theater, radio and film performances to provoke the tensions between Latinos and Anglos.

Inherent to this border culture is an identity crisis. Before the large waves of immigration identity in Mexico was a static structure, connected to national territory and language. A Mexican is someone who had lived in Mexico and spoke Spanish. That's that. Those who immigrated were seen as traitors. Gomez-Pena was fully aware of the consequences of his departure for America. For him, then began a process of Pocho-ization and de-Mexicanization.

But the modernization via the Internet, through immigration, political events, etc. a multicultural society arose. So one of the limits of crossing borders is an identity crisis. Inherited identities have become dysfunctional and useless. Gomez-Pena says that if he was not a Chicano, he had died of loneliness and nostalgia. The Chicanos taught him a different way of thinking about himself as an artist and as a citizen. Because of the Chicanos he discovered that his art can be developed as a way to investigate and reinvent multiple and ever-changing identities. Gomez-Pena was no longer nostalgic, but he began to live in the present. His chicanoization process started abruptly.

One of the lessons learned so Gomez-Pena of performance art is that we can reinvent our identity. We have the ability to pick, choose and approve something of our multiple selves to construct and create a more human "being". Tadeusz Kantor (1915 - 1990) was an artistic centipede. That's the least you can say about him. Kantor's works carry elements inspired by different aspects of Expressionism, Constructivism, Dadaism, Surrealism, etc. Still he always kept a unique perspective on theater and acting methods.

During the postwar period Kantor wrote his most famous polemics and manifestos that would outline his the further development of his theatrical language and vision of man and society.
